Clarinetist Lawrence Sobol passed away yesterday. His contributions to the clarinet world were truly revolutionary. Hailed by the New York Times as “an intrepid musical explorer,” Sobol is known most for his collaborations with leading American composers David Diamond, Karel Husa, and Alan Hovhaness, among others. In addition to a substantial classical career, he is perhaps the only American clarinetist to have substantial ties to the popular music genre, having performed with legendary American songwriter and performer Richie Havens at the original Woodstock festival, Carnegie Hall, and on various recordings. His multifaceted career resulted in an MTV/VH-1 Lifetime Achievement Award, presented in 2001. Larry was committed to passing the torch of great pedagogy to the next generation, having studied with clarinet greats Harold Wright, Ignatius Gennusa, David Weber, Herbert Blayman and Rudolph Jettel. Veteran New York Times critic Theodore Strongin summed up Mr. Sobol’s artisty: “Sobol’s technique doesn’t need mentioning, so smooth and effortless is his playing. What stands out with him is the extremely minute, concentrated and sensitive nature of his musical thought. You can almost touch it, it’s so strong.” (Many thanks to Josh Redman for providing this information and the photo.)
