  1. This character depicted here is a man hit by the economic depression in America in the early 1920s caused by the return of the troops from the recent world war . Adjusting to the peacetime economy left many people unemployed. The man in the sketch is broke and trying to make a few pennies from shinning shoes. He still has his double breasted jacket and nice shoes, but his face is careworn and he is getting tired of his lonely humiliating struggle. As you can see, fashion still attracted the eye if not the pocket book.
