A Girl

Some 20 years ago. I was visiting a little girl in a hospital is south Florida who had followed her daddy as he crossed the street. She was hit by a car and was in a comma. I took my violin and played to her very day. Her daddy would not visit because he was afraid they would bring charges against him for negligence or child abuse. She finally came out of the comma and though she had sustained some damage from the accident I hope she has fully recovered now. I haven’t stayed in touch. One day when I went to visit her, the mother said there had been some terrible screaming and commotion the night before. I will relate to you (for your knowledge) a sad story that you may not want to read about. Stop reading now if you don’t want to know it. It is tragic. Stop now and go your way if…, or read further.
The “10 year old” girl across the hall (had been very ill, still weak, and had lost the ability to speak) I also looked in on her, much less frequently though. Her devoted mother at her bedside almost always had been fighting with the hospital staff as to the kind of help or lack of help and attention her daughter was receiving from the hospital workers. Apparently the staff hated the “arrogant” mother. The staff nurses versus the mother. They insulted and complained against each other often. The mother tried to direct, control and protect her daughter’s well being etc.
I was told by the mother of the girl I was visiting, that the night before the other girl was to go home, her mother went home to set up her room and get things ready for her return home. When she returned to the hospital her daughter was dead. The mother was hysterical and screaming etc. the moral to the story in my opinion:

1.) She should not have left her helpless daughter’s side and should not have gone home to organize the house.
2.) Never take anything for granted.
3.) Never underestimate how low and vicious your adversary may be.

I am sorry to share such a terrible story, but I do so only so that we all may learn from this and that it will not happen again due to our awareness.
