octet

This sketch is one of many I did of my big room at the violin shop. We built a stage and had concerts there before we “downsized” and gave up the room, which is now full of computers.
It was exactly the way we left it the night we finished playing the Schubert Octet. the instrumentation is Clarinet, Bassoon, Horn, Bass, Cello,
Viola, and two Violins. It is a wonderful piece of music and one of the few composed for such an instrumentation. That evening we also played the Beethoven Septet. If you look carefully you can see the music on the music stand. The words “Octet” and “Beethoven” can be seen.
I’ve done better sketches of this room, but can’t place them at the moment. If you count very carefully you can see eight chairs and eight music stands. Though the bassist Gino didn’t sit when he played his 300 year old bass. Out the window is NYC at Broadway and 80th street looking east.
